New Paltz winery draws food festival crowds
About 1,850 attend annual event

Poughkeepsie Journal

NEW PALTZ — At the the annual Bounty of the Hudson food and wine festival Sunday, Rivendell Winery of New Paltz featured a chardonay, a merlot and a sangria.

"Our sangria went over the best," manager Melanie Neucall said of the lighter wine punch. "It definitely was a sweeter crowd."

That wasn't surprising, she said. On a weekend marked by stifling temperatures and an excessive heat watch issued by the National Weather Service, festival-goers were reaching for something that was refreshing.

"When the temperature is 90 or above, you don't want a heavy red wine, or at least I don't," Neucall said.

The festival, now in its 11th year, is hosted at a different winery of the Shawangunk Wine Trail each year. The wine trail consists of family-owned wineries in the Hudson Valley that produce their products on premises.

This year, it was Adair Winery's turn to host.

Brotherhood Winery Strikes Gold With Cabernet!

Brotherhood America's Oldest Winery, Ltd. 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon won Gold in the 2006 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition!

This dry red wine is produced from fully ripened grapes harvested from the north fork of Long Island; vinified in a Bordeaux technique in full contact with the skins to extract maximum color, flavor and tannins in a rotating tank; then aged in small limousin oak 58 gal. barrels for a period of 2 years.

The cabernet is no stranger to the winner's circle. It's won such awards before, including, Bronze Medal, 2003 NYS Fair Commercial Wine Competition. Silver Medal, Hudson Valley Wine Competition 2004. Bronze Medal, NY Wine & Food Classic 2004. Gold Medal, 2006 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition.

And Wine Spectator rated 85 on May 2006.

If you can find it...buy two or three. Drink one now and save one or two for a special occassion.

Lot's Going On At Applewood Winery

Applewood Winery is in one of our favorite parts of the world - Warwick, New York. They have a lot of fun events to show up for this summer...and a lot of great wine too! Howard G. Goldberg once wrote of them, this "is a mom-and-pop operation begun in 1993. Jonathan Hull and his wife, Michele, sell a spicy, tangy apple wine....Summer Fields, a semidry seyval that vaguely resembles a light German wine. Don't pass up the cider and doughnuts.

Listen to Howard - we almost always do.

Some of their wines include:
SEYVAL/CHARDONNAY: Color, White, Dry, Serving temp. Cold. A crisp, fresh white.

RIESLING: Semi-Dry, serve chilled. A whisper of fruit to start, cool & dry at the finish

SUMMER FIELDS: Semi Dry. A soft & fruity Seyval Blanc with peach & apricot notes.

WAWAYANDA WHITE: Semi-Dry. Light & crisp.

STONE FENCE HARD CIDER: Semi-Dry, award winning sparkling cider with a subtle taste of honey.

APPLE BLOSSOM BLUSH: Blush, semi-dry, blend of apples and red grapes.

MACINTOSH: White, semi-dry, 100% varietal apple wine.

AUTUMN MIST: Sweet apple dessert wine. The New York Times said captures "the essence of apple....[a] treat."

MERLOT: Dry, with a hint of black pepper in the finish.

CABERNET FRANC: Rich, dry, noble red, with big berry taste.

BLUEBERRY: Red, semi-sweet, dessert wine made from blueberries.

STRAWBERRY: Sweet – 100% strawberry dessert wine.
