Hudson Valley magazine , in the August 2018 issue, raves about the region's wineries. Written by Febbie Gioquindo, also known as the Hudson Valley Wine Goddess, has profiled numerous wineries and trails throughout the southern and mid-Hudson Valley, including producers from the Shawangunk, Dutchess, and Hudson Berkshire wine trails. A great article, highlighting numerous artisanal wines and personalities from the valley! Terrific piece! Go HV! </div>

I would hate to see what Paul Denino could do with some big money behind him. Because I will tell you this. He's one of the most talented boutique winemakers on the east coast. Always evolving, both as a winemaker and as a winery owner. Inventive. Driven. Fascinating to watch.</div>

The second wine I tried was even better and easily my favorite! Paul has long made his estate cayuga named White Tail. But this new re-imaging of the wine was breathtaking on two levels. Firstly, he doesn't bottle the wine - he fills it like growlers. I couldn't buy a bottle, they told me, But I could buy a growler! I wanted it it as soon as they told me that. Brilliant! Secondly, he's infused one of his most popular wines with lavender! The Bashakill Lavendar White Tail is the estate wine infused with locally grown organic lavender. Green apple, peach, and other stone fruits are wafted over with the lightest hint of lavendar. Instead of being over whelming, and making the wine smell like a bar of soap (as clumsier hands might have done), the wine is fragrant and breathtaking!!!!</div>

Michael Migliore and Yancey Stanforth-Migliore own Whitecliff Vineyard, a wonderful winery down in Gardner, NY. They have won numerous prestigious awards, and were recently voted best winery in the Hudson Valley. But they have a new project - the Olana Vineyard at Cherry Lane Farm, just by the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, south of Hudson, NY. This is an historically good grape growing region. The numerous farms in the southern part of Columbia county have grown table and wine grapes for more than 50 years. Brotherhood's main vineyard was the next farm, and is now the home of Tousey, who have garnered scores of 90 or more consistently. So we know the region has tremendous potential. The Whitecliff Vineyard can be seen from the river, and indeed the bridge itself, where I took this photo.</div>

The Hudson Valley was not known for rose' wine, but has been catching up to the industry in recent years. No better example of it is there than Whitecliff's Rose of Pinot Noir Olana Vineyard 2017. This wine starts off with gorgeous, mouth watering aromas of cherries, strawberries, line and tropical fruits. On the palate the strawberries are fresh, vibrant and tart, with a lovely second wave of bright cherries, also slightly tart with minerals, lime, and tropical notes, and a lovely, creamy smooth finish.<br />
<br />
This is evry bit as good as any rose in the state, and an incredible first wine from what will soon be a source of some of the best fruit in the valley. The potential is outstanding!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Doug Glorie is a long time farmer and wine maker. He and MaryEllen Glorie run the Glorie Farm and the Glorie Farm Winery. Doug has been supplying grapes to the valley winemakers for years. But of late Doug and his talented group have been turning out some excellent wines, especially with the help of the talented wine maker Kristop Brown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I recently ran into Doug at the Bounty of the Hudson Wine Festival just this last month. He was pitching a number of his wines, but my eyes were attracted to two new wines...a new rose' and a Marquette. I was anxious to taste them!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The first thing I tried recently was the Glorie Rose of Cabernet Franc 2017. This is a fine fresh rose made from 100% estate Cab Franc, and its filled with strawberries, and bright Bing cherries, rhubarb, lime, and cream. This is a delicious, high quality rose that is a standout just in the valley, but could easily compete on Long Island or the Finger Lakes as well. Truly great stuff. And BTW, I love, love the new label!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Glorie Farm Winery Marquette is a big dark deep wine with bramble berry and dark cherries, cedar and hints of dried blueberry. Also hints of toast and vanilla. A pretty, and lovely, medium-bodied red with big flavor and soft tannins. Very, very drinkable.</div>

Hudson-Chatham Winery’s ongoing expansion plans are moving along nicely. The Columbia County winery and tasting room was founded in 2007, added a second tasting room in 2015, and now has added a third tasting room to its lineup.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The new venue — called <a href="https://hudsonchathamtroy.com/" style="border: 0px; color: #95a5a6; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; transition: all 0.25s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;">Hudson-Chatham Winery Troy</a> — is located at 203 River Street in downtown Troy, briefly the home of Sweet Sues whose chef-owner Sue Dunckel maintains a connection with the site by providing its breakfast and lunch fare. The menu includes, obviously in addition to H-C wines and adult beverages from other local producers, coffee made for the winery by Chris’ Coffee Service of Albany. Plans call for a broadening of the menu to include local artisanal cheese varieties.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Troy hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, although hours may be extended on Fridays and Saturdays. Brunch will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Everything we do is Hudson Valley or Capital Region,” Carlo DeVito, who runs the winery with his wife Dominique, told local media. “The idea is that it’s local, local, local, local.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The new venue is managed by Mackenzy Morgan. DeVito said plans are being discussed to add several more satellite tasting rooms at locations to be decided.</div>

TROY, N.Y.>> There’s a new place to do some tasting in the Collar City’s downtown district.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Hudson-Chatham Winery, located in Columbia County, is opening a tasting room at 203 River St. in downtown Troy, the former location of Sweet Sue’s.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
After a sneak peek at Troy River Fest earlier this month, the new business will be open to the public this Fourth of July weekend, followed by a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony with the Troy Downtown Business Improvement District, with details to be announced.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This is the 10-year-old winery’s third tasting room, adding to its on-site tasting location in Ghent, and one opened in 2015 in Tannersville.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The new tasting room will be open Tuesday through Sunday from about 10:30 to 5 p.m. most days, and later on Fridays and Saturdays.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the daytime, the Troy tasting room will offer breakfast and lunch fare by Sweet Sue’s chef Sue Dunckel, along with coffees made especially for Hudson-Chatham Winery by Albany-based Chris’ Coffee Service. Brunch will be served on Saturdays and Sundays.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Later on, the space will have more of a wine bar vibe with local cheese plates and, of course, wine. The tasting room will offer a variety of Hudson-Chatham wines, as well as other area spirits, beer and cider.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Everything we do is Hudson Valley or Capital Region,” said owner Carlo DeVito, who runs the winery along with his wife Dominique. “The idea is that it’s local, local, local, local.”</div>
<div class="teads-inread" style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All Hudson-Chatham wines are made using Greene and Columbia county grapes.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The majority of the winery’s products are dry red wines, the most notable being its Baco noirs. The upstate winery was awarded the title of having the highest rated Baco noir in North America, DeVito said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
For those who prefer other styles, Hudson-Chatham Winery makes a little bit of everything, DeVito said, “so we have something for everyone.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
At the new site, customers can do a tasting session of five different wines for $7, or order by the glass or bottle. Bottles will be for sale to take home, too.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The tasting rooms spirits, beer and cider inventory will also be available to drink on premise or purchase to-go.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
On why the owners decided to offer products from other local businesses alongside their own, DeVito said they wanted to offer some variety to the consumer, as well as support other producers from the region. “I’m all about local, and there’s a lot of people making really great product and to me it’s an easy way to get it on out,” he said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Regarding the winery’s most recent expansion to Rensselaer County, “Troy is a great little market,” DeVito said, noting that the demographic includes a younger population that the winery would like to reach.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Furthermore, the district was appealing. “I love this historic downtown area,” DeVito said. “It’s a great neighborhood.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
While there are a number of downtown bars, DeVito believes the tasting room and wine bar will offer something different to the area, because all of its products are strictly local.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Looking ahead at his goals for this new downtown Troy endeavor, DeVito said, “We just want to become a part of the scene. That’s really what we’re thrilled about.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Run by manager Mackenzy Morgan, this new location will host a schedule of special tasting events and local music.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Once the Troy tasting room is established, the winery owners would like to open a few more in the future, DeVito said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

An established Columbia County winery has crossed the river to open a tasting room in Tannersville, the newest of several eating and drinking establishments that have recently debuted in the Greene County mountaintop village.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.hudsonchathamwinery.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Hudson-Chatham Winery</span></a>, which has been making award-winning wines using all New York State grapes since 2008, is scheduled to pour its first tastings this Saturday, July 18, barring any last-minute paperwork delays with its state permits, said Carlo DeVito, who operates the Ghent, N.Y., winery with his wife Dominique.<br />
<br />
“We’re really excited to be here, and to throw the doors open and start pouring,” said DeVito, who hosted an open house over July Fourth weekend to show off the tasting rooms and lounge area, which will have a wine bar feel.<br />
<br />
The tasting room will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to start, and will adjust its hours as the business develops, DeVito said. It will offer tastings of its own wines, bottle sales and special events featuring other local and regional products such as bourbon. It is not a restaurant, but will offer a cheese plate showcasing crackers, breads and cheeses from Columbia and Greene counties. Other prepared foods that Hudson-Chatham develops with fellow Hudson Valley producers, such as jams, will also be for sale. The DeVitos saw an opportunity to bring their products to a Catskills audience that might not travel to the main winery, and also a chance to tap into a ski crowd that will boost business in the winter months, which are slower at the winery.<br />
<br />
“We feel like we can offer something that’s not available in the area now,” DeVito said. “We were seeing so many good stores and restaurants and other purveyors coming into Tannersville, and thought, ‘This is the place we want to be.'”<br />
<br />

<br />
The <a href="http://hunterfoundation.org/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Hunter Foundation</span></a> purchased the building, which previously housed a candle shop, and then rehabilitated it in collaboration with the new tenant, bringing a black-and-white decor that echoes the original winery’s design. In addition to the interior space, there is also a spacious patio around back, which will offer outdoor seating.<br />
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" data-shortcode="caption" id="attachment_224" style="width: 670px;">

<br />
The new tasting room joins several other new spots that have opened in recent months or are scheduled to launch soon in and around the Tannersville/Hunter/Windham area of Greene County. They include two other Hunter Foundation projects, American Glory BBQ and Mama’s Boy Burgers. <a href="http://www.americanglory.com/ordereze/default.aspx" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">American Glory BBQ</span></a>, just across the street from the new winery building, is closing in on its first anniversary, having opened in August 2014. Just a few blocks away, <a href="http://www.mamasboycatskills.com/mamas-boy-burgers.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Mama’s Boy Burgers</span></a> leapt off to a roaring start this summer, drawing lines from day one, along with early praise from big media like New York Magazine and Food + Wine. Located in the old Smiley’s ice cream building at 6067 Main St., Mama’s Boy Burgers is the brainchild of Michael Koegel, who has operated <a href="http://www.mamasboycatskills.com/mamas-boy-coffee-shop.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Mama’s Boy Market</span></a> in Phoenicia for five years.<br />
<div class="wp-caption alignnone" data-shortcode="caption" id="attachment_240" style="height: 16px; width: 1px;">
<div class="wp-caption-text">
</div>
</div>
“It was a great location. People were clamoring for Smiley’s to reopen, and it was just a great opportunity,” Koegel said. While Tannersville already had plenty of coffee shops, including the excellent 1-year-old <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Twin-Peaks-Coffee-Donuts/167554073397379?sk=timeline" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Twin Peaks Coffee & Donuts</span></a> on the eastern edge of town, Koegel correctly predicted that an ice cream shop would hit a niche. Desiring to operate year-round, however, he paired Jane’s Ice Cream and 26 flavors of soft-serve custard with local grassfed Angus Beef burgers sourced just a few miles away at JJF Farm in East Jewett. Fries, salads, shakes, floats and a couple of sandwiches round out the menu, resulting in a Shake Shack, In-N-Out Burger feel to the place, but with a unique Catskills atmosphere–and a giant ice cream cone on the roof. Mama’s Boy Burgers opens daily at 11:30 a.m., and closes at 9 p.m. during the week and 10 p.m. on the weekends, and it is often slammed from open to close, Koegel said.<br />
<br />
“Businesses are booming in Tannersville,” said Anne Jakubowski, the Hunter Foundation’s executive director. “There’s been a lot of activity here in a short amount of time.”<br />
<br />
The 18-year-old nonprofit, whose mission is to boost economic development by using private funds and federal grants to purchase and rehabilitate old buildings in the Hunter area, also <a href="http://www.thedailymail.net/news/article_64ae0652-17aa-11e5-952e-b3a6699b08c2.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">celebrated the opening of a new pharmacy, Wellness Rx, in the Astor House</span></a> building in Tannersville last month. The foundation has also purchased the old Villa Maria resort and is currently conducting a feasibility study to examine options there, Jakubowski said.<br />
<br />
Each of the four newly opened businesses is an expansion or spin-off of an existing business outside of Greene County; the original American Glory is in Hudson, and the first Wellness Rx is in High Falls. That’s a sign that Tannersville, with help from the Hunter Foundation, is drawing successful business owners to take a chance, said Jeff Friedman, the executive director of the Greene County Chamber of Commerce.<br />
<br />
“Tannersville is growing quickly and steadily,” said Friedman, noting several other new businesses opening in nearby towns. Among them: La Patisserie Normande, a French pastry shop at 5339 Main St. in Windham; <a href="http://www.karenscountrykitchenny.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Karen’s Country Kitchen</span></a>, a new breakfast and lunch cafe in Hunter Village Square, which began as a food truck last summer; and Hunter Mountain Brewery, a restaurant that opened at 7261 Route 23A between Hunter and Tannersville in May. Hunter Mountain Brewery is not making its own beer yet, but has the set up to do so eventually. In August, yet another brewery, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hammosbrewpubandlodge" target="_blank"><span style="color: #266d89;">Hammo’s Brewpub & Lodge</span></a>, is scheduled to open at 39 Goshen Road in the hamlet of Hensonville, within the town limits of Windham.<br />
<br />
Since breweries, wineries and distilleries make up a large percentage of the county’s growing business base, Friedman’s organization is working to establish a Greene County Beverage Trail. The chamber has applied for a state grant to set up a program showcasing beer, wine, cider and spirits made from Catskills and Hudson Valley farm products, similar to the trail that Schoharie County is set to launch Aug. 1.<br />
<br />
Hudson-Chatham Winery will be happy to join in, DeVito said.<br />
<br />
“There is a lot going on with artisanal beverages in Greene County right now that people don’t know about,” he said. “It’s a great time to get in on the ground floor of all the exciting things happening here.”<br />

Before the craft beverage scene took root in the Hudson Valley, there was Hudson Whiskey.<br />
<br />
As the first whiskey distillery in New York since Prohibition, Tuthilltown Spirits Distillery in Gardiner, the distiller of Hudson Whiskey, was ahead of the curve. In the past 10 years since its founding, the whiskey industry has blossomed. Its growing presence in the Hudson Valley has created jobs, generated tax revenue and contributed to tourism.<br />
<br />
Since 2005, 114 licensed distillers opened in New York, including six in Dutchess and Ulster Counties according to ny.gov.<br />
<br />
Dutchess County denizens can enjoy Denning’s Point Distillery in Beacon or Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains, while Ulster County is home to several distilleries, including Coppersea Distilling in West Park and Tuthilltown.<br />
<br />
A nationwide phenomenon, the distilled spirits industry contributed to 1,256,732 jobs and generated $15,503,825 in state and local taxes in 2010, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reports.<br />
<br />
Celebrating its 10th anniversary since its launch, Hudson Whiskey offers a distinct selection of whiskey styles, each emblematic of the Hudson Valley.<br />
<br />
“It created something that was hyper local,” said Gable Erenzo, 35, distiller and brand ambassador for Hudson Whiskey.<br />
<br />
Originally from New York City, Ralph Erenzo, founder of Hudson Whiskey and Gable Erenzo’s father, saw potential in the Hudson Valley and Tuthilltown. Originally hoping to open a rock-climbers’ ranch, Ralph Erenzo switched plans to a distillery when he was unable to obtain a variance to use the property for something other than farming.<br />
<br />
In order to do so, Ralph Erenzo had to find a way to overcome a stifling license fee that had discouraged previous distilleries from opening in that state.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Ralph Erenzo pushed for a cheaper distiller’s license targeted at small operations, resulting in a new category that cost $1,500, down from $65,000, as long as the distiller produced less than 35,000 gallons per year.<br />
<br />
For a long time, distilleries remained the missing link in establishing Dutchess County and the mid-Hudson Valley as a prime foodie attraction, said Lydia Higginson, deputy director of tourism at Dutchess Tourism.<br />
<br />
“A huge draw for the tourist and the individual, the rise of distilleries over the last few years helps complete our offering and brands us as a food and beverage destination,” Higginson said.<br />
<br />
The opportunity to see where the grains and other ingredients grow draws tourists attracted by the farm-to-table movement, she said.<br />
<br />
Hudson Whiskey offers tours of its distillery, including a tasting room on site. Tuthilltown Spirits Distillery also features a restaurant.<br />
<br />
This boost extends beyond the distilleries, benefiting local business — namely the farms. By purchasing ingredients locally, Tuthilltown Spirits Distillery maintains close ties with area farms while generating business, Gable Erenzo said.<br />
<br />
“A lot of farms that were struggling could now sell at a top dollar price point,” he said.<br />
<br />
Tantillo Farm in Gardiner reports an increase in visitors and tourists since Tuthilltown Spirits Distillery opened.<br />
<br />
“We really like working with them (Hudson Whiskey),” said Beverly Tantillo, secretary at the farm. “They really do contribute and help the neighborhood. Just by being here, they bring in people from all over.”<br />
<br />
Today, Hudson Whiskey is sold in 15 countries outside the United States.<br />
<br />
As the scene grows and more distilleries pop up, Gable Erenzo said it’s not a competition, but camaraderie among distillers. In many cases, Hudson Whiskey offered advice and help for people interested in joining the industry.<br />
<br />
“It’s great to see more people push the envelope and do new and exciting things,” he said.<br />

In the past decade, the Big Apple’s craft-spirits scene has exploded, thanks to eased regulations and a growing thirst for small-batch booze.</div>

There are now about 70 New York “farm distilleries” — where at least 75 percent of the raw materials come from within the state — up from less than a dozen a few years ago. Some of these distilleries even grow the grains and botanicals for their liquors to control everything that goes into the bottle, and many offer tours and charming tasting experiences.</div>

“You eat local, now drink local” is the motto at this small upstart, which will celebrate its first anniversary later this month.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Co-founder John Glebocki is a fifth-generation vegetable farmer. He got the idea to start growing grains on a portion of his 120-acre Orange County property to make spirits after talking with his wife’s cousin, Bryan Ensall, at a party.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Like all good ideas, it started with alcohol,” quips Ensall, who previously worked in insurance and lawn care.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All of the corn, barley, wheat and botanicals are grown right on the farm, a short walk from the barnyard tasting room, where you can sample the distillery’s gin, vodka and various whiskeys and see how it’s all made, right in the back, from crop to bottle.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Though the company is young, its spirits are served at the critically lauded Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant. They’re devoted to doing everything themselves, even malting their barley — a process by which the grain germinates after being soaked in water and then dried in hot air.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The area’s particularly rich “black dirt” is said to impart a special terroir on the spirits. “It finishes or starts with the earth tone; there’s a hint of the barn,” says Glebocki.</div>

Jeff Baker, a finance guy who splits his time between the Upper East Side and a beautiful upstate house built in 1806 by a Revolutionary War general, only opened his distillery in 2010, but already he’s racked up accolades, including numerous medals from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It helps that he’s got Dave Pickerell on his team. Pickerell spent 14 years working as the master distiller for Maker’s Mark before leaving the company to make small-batch spirits.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“They can make in a day what we can do in a year,” Pickerell says.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All of the organic barley, rye and corn are grown right on the hilly, picturesque 250-acre farm.<br />
“When you’re in the tasting room, you’re looking out at the field your whiskey was grown in,” says Baker.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Hillrock recently started malting its own barley in a stately barn built just for the purpose. The process takes three to four days, with one ton of barley, spread out across a cement floor, raked every six to eight hours like a Zen garden.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“It’s pretty labor intensive,” says Baker. “It’s kind of a lost art.”</div>

Located on a route strewn with wineries, this unpretentious newcomer offers easygoing good times. There’s a bar and outdoor courtyard called the Cocktail Grove where visitors can wile away their day and enjoy drinks like the Nonny Rose ($10), made from the distillery’s own applejack, pomegranate juice, maple syrup and lemon juice.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“The whole idea with this place is to be a destination, where you can sit around for a few hours,” says Chris Moyer, who founded the distillery in April 2014 after working as a CPA for years in Virginia.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
While the distillery does do a bourbon, it focuses more on vodka, gin and applejack — a high-proof spirit made from apples that was popular in Colonial times and is back in vogue with cocktail geeks. The distillery is housed in a 100-year-old red barn, and Moyer has a knack for explaining the spirits-making process in a simple, easy-to-understand manner on group tours.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #2e2e2f; font-stretch: normal; padding: 0px 0px 15px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He currently grows on-site only the botanicals for his gin, but Moyer hopes to grow apples on his own 12 acres in the coming years.</div>

Right across the road from the site of the original Woodstock festival, this charming distillery boasts a restaurant called the Dancing Cat Saloon in a beautiful old Victorian house, a smaller cafe and bar, a sculpture garden, and a slightly psychedelic aesthetic. But that’s not to say they’re not serious about their whiskey making.</div>

It’s time again for Pasta Primo Vino, a tradition of the
Shawangunk Wine Trail that marries local wines with pasta dishes and invites
tasters to visit any or all of the 14 vineyards this weekend for a sampling and
a snack.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“It’s always fun to see how people receive our wine,” says
MaryEllen Glorie. She and her husband, Doug, are the Glories behind Glorie Farm
Winery in Marlboro. She’s also president of the Shawangunk Wine Trail, the
organization that supports the collection of Hudson Valley wineries, large and
small, that make up the trail.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While winery owners are busy with the typical chores of
their trade – Glorie says her winery is currently bottling its 2014 Peach Wine
– they’re also preparing for this first-of-the-season event. Vineyard owners
have selected their pasta recipes and there’ll be a lot of cooking going on for
the 400 to 600 or more visitors who will stop by during Pasta Primo Vino. At
Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery, they’re putting on extra staff to
assist visitors for this event, says Jeremy Kidde, co-owner. At his location,
like the others, the winery will remain open to all visitors during the
weekend. “We set up a table separately from the rest of the dining area” to
accommodate Pasta Primo Vino visitors, Kidde says. It can get quite busy.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s a tasty two-way street. For wine enthusiasts and for
those who love knowing about all that the region has to offer, it’s an
exploration. “It’s a good time to learn a little bit about how each wine
differs,” says Tiffany Robibero Selby. She’s vice president of the Wine Trail
and an owner of the Robibero Family Winery.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“It’s great for us,” says Glorie. “My winery is closed
January, February and March, (as are some of the others on the trail) so one of
the intents of having Pasta Primo Vino in April is that it gets people out and
back to the wineries. Wakes everybody back up. It’s a great day out in the
Hudson Valley, when things are starting to green up (and) it’s starting to get
a little warmer.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
How it works<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A two-day pass for Pasta Primo Vino permits a leisurely trek
from vineyard to vineyard. One-day passes are available too. There’s a special
rate for the designated driver, who can expect pasta and a non-alcoholic
beverage at the wineries. Ticket holders will sample four wines at each vineyard,
including one that has been pre-selected and paired with a pasta dish. At least
one site, Adair Winery in New Paltz, is serving a gluten-free pasta.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Advanced ticket sales are closed now but tickets can be
purchased at the wineries. The event can begin at any of the 14 vineyards on
the tour, where a souvenir Wine Trail glass comes with ticket purchase.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What’s new<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Besides tasting some of the region’s top local vintages,
it’s also a chance to be among the very first to sample the new releases.
“These feature grapes harvested from local vines as recently as last October,
and highlight the bright, fresh flavors of the Hudson Valley’s whites which,
unlike the reds, do not require time in the barrel to age and soften,”
according to the folks at Shawangunk Wine Trail.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At Glorie Farm, they’re currently bottling their newest
vintage, Peach Wine, which will be available for tasting this weekend. It
includes a mixture of 75 percent New York state peaches and 25 percent from
beyond. “Most everything in our bottles was grown here on our farm,” says
MaryEllen Glorie.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In New Paltz, the Robibero family also has been busy
bottling. “We usually release our 87 North during this event, which is our most
popular wine.” Named after the New York State Thruway, this wine won best white
in the Hudson Valley in September at the Hudson Valley Wine Competition, says
Tiffany Robibero Selby.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But they are not the only area winemakers whose vintages
have won and continue to win awards. Check the Wine Trail website for more
information or visit the individual wineries to sample for yourself.<o:p></o:p></div>

For the whites were started off with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
True Thirst Hard Apple Cider</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hudson-Chatham Seyal Blanc Block 1 2013</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tousey Chardonnay 2013</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Whitecliff Chardonnay Reserve 2013</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All these wines were very well received. The True Thirst was a nice shocker for the crowd. This cider, made at Brotherhood in Washingtonville, NY, is a dry cider and many in the crowd compared it favorably with sparkling wine. The Hudson-Chatham Seyval was a nice surprise, as many in the crowd were not familiar with the grape. The two chardonnays were a big hit, and contrasted nicely - the Tousey was fresh and bright and the Whitecliff was extremely elegant with slightly more oak.</div>

The crowd loved the red wines from the Hudson Valey! Tousey Pinot was a big favorite, and the Hudson-Chatham Baco was a real crowd pleaser. Both Cabernet Francs, from Millbrook and from Whitecliff, were both very, very impressive. The Hudson-Chatham Empire was another favorite, and the Frontenacwas the sleeper. Again, few had ever had it, but compared it to a blend of Syrah and Petite Verdot. It showed beautifully!</div>

It was a very successful tasting, and many said they would be up in the spring and summer to sample more wines in the valley. A great time was had by all, and I could not have been more excited!</div>
