Marc Stopkie and David Pazdar: Two of the Good Guys
Marc Stopkie and David Pazdar.
Marc is the owner winemaker of Adair Vineyards, and one of the most ubiquitous presences in all of Hudson Valley Wine. If there is a festival, he's there. If there's a meeting, he's there. If there's a conference, he's there. He's quiet and unassuming. He's always helpful, if somewhat bashful at first. And he makes great wine. He's one of the great, hard working, success stories of the Hudson River Valley wineries. His new 2006 Blackberry Kir is tremendous!
David Pazdar is similar if different. Pazdar Winery isn't based on a big or small farm. There's no tasting room or shack or anything. He makes his wine in his garage, and he's forbidden by local laws from holding tastings in his home, or in his neighborhood. He is a true garagista. But that doesn't hold him back. David is also passionate about his wines. He's at numerous festivals and events around the state and a ubiquitous presence at all the farmer's markets up and down the river. David makes some wonderful varietals and some very different wines as well. His new Gewurztraminer and Riesling are great, and you've got to try Sultry Dragon, a dry white wine that gets a nice, spicy kick from ginger!
These are really two of the hardest working guys out there. (p.s. anyone who owns a winery is working their tails off). They own small wineries, who make handcrafted wines. You need to seek these people out! It's people like these that make the Hudson River Valley such a special wine place.
