Glorie Farm Winery Opens Again
Doug and MaryEllen Glorie
Anne Reagan
Doug and MaryEllen Glorie are the proprietors of Glorie Farm Winery. Both grew up in neighboring Orange County. Doug bought the property in 1979 when there was nothing on it but the barn and a carriage house. Since then they've planted 20+ acres of fruit. After 23 years with IBM, Doug started farming full-time in 1993. MaryEllen spent ten years as a teacher of the deaf in Maryland before Doug lured her back to New York to stay in 1992. She now works as a freelance sign language interpreter for the deaf.
Anne Reagan is the winemaker, and also owns and operates Albanhaus Kennels. Before joining Glorie Farm Winery, Anne spent seventeen years working with Mark Miller, a pioneer in Hudson Valley winemaking.
This is a fabulous boutique winery, with wonderful handcrafted wines. They are closed from January through May...and with Memorial Day, the doors of the winery are now opened to the public once again. You better race up their, or you'll miss out. They ofer many wines...too many to review here. But they have two new wines to brag about.
First is Red Monkey. This was the Silver Medal Winner at the 2005 Hudson Valley Wine and Grape Growers Association Wine Competition. This is an excellent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and the farm's estate reds. This medium-bodied dry red wine was cellared for four months in old French barrels and new American oak.
Also exciting is the new Apple Wine, that was Bronze Medal Winner at the 2005 Hudson Valley Wine and Grape Growers Association Wine Competition. The Glories and and Anne blended sixteen varieties of apples from their orchards to craft this fun wine. With 1% residual sugar this is a dry wine, lovely when served cold. A great, classy summer sipper.
